During the course of the semester I worked on a multi-genre project on the topic of brain-related sports injuries. As I learned more and more through research about my topic while going through the process of completing this project, a few common goals were set and stone and reached. In the paragraphs to follow I will explain how my website fulfilled the variety of goals that were set and reached for this project.
A.Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes.
In my interview with Roger Goodell before the actual question and answer between the two of us began, I made my audience clear. I made sure the introduction of the interview reached out to the audience by stating some of their concerns and questions about the issues that have arisen. In the introduction I introduced the problem and some possible solutions that the commissioner can partake in to handling this issue. Throughout the interview the purpose was to get as much information out of Mr. Goodell as possible towards how he is and plans to handle the topic of football and brain-related injuries.
B. Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre.
My advertisement was affective in using language and conventions appropriate to a specific genre. Because this was an advertisement I could no longer just write as if I was just trying to inform my audience about a problem such as the background information did in my website. I had to approach this genre differently because it was an advertisement. I made sure to use catchy phrases that were memorable which are essential for advertisements. I also made sure that not just my writing style change, but the way in which my writing was presented to again make the advertisement more memorable.
C. Students will be able to read, select and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.
My graphs in which I compared professional sports to college sports could have not been done without outside sources evidence being read and properly selected. In order to complete this genre I had to look up statistics on a variety of websites to get the information I needed to support my argument in a way in which I wanted to for that specific genre.
D.Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/non-print genres. No matter how interested a person is in a topic if they feel like they are reading the same thing over and over again in the same type of writing style they will get bored of the topic. In order to keep my audience interested and intrigued I needed to adjust my writing style along with my genres. I feel like my advertisement and graphs do a good job of completing this goal through a variety of ways. First off, I made sure my alignment was crisp therefor the audience would take the ad seriously and in a professional manner. I also had to catch the eye of my audience in order for them to actually be interested in my advertisement so I did a good job of contrasting the colors and font of this genre as opposed to keeping something like my interview more black and white.
E.Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative context. I feel like my professional genre does a great job of completing this goal in particular. I first made a rough draft which was then reviewed by not only my peers but my professor as well. After the revisions were made due to the process of the reviews from both my peers and professor I now have a professional genre that persuades my audience in most ideal way for my topic.
Reflection
As I researched and learned more and more about my topic I found that this project was becoming a hobby. And the reason I felt that way is because I was having fun learning about this topic! I learned that sports are a lot like life in the fact that nothing is promised. In sports and in life no moment should be taken for granted because you never know when it could be your last. The project really made me take a different perspective on the topic of brain damage in sports. I did not know how relevant brain damage is in the sports world is, and it made me question how important the sport of football really is to me now knowing the possible consequences and the thought that this project made me question my love for the game shocked me. However the process of creating this project was a little challenging for me, it took me awhile to get use to wiki and because of that I fell a little behind. But as I got more comfortable the process in general began to come to me more smoothly. I felt as though the professional genre was very difficult to complete because I had never written anything like that before, it forced me to expand my thinking further about my topic. It also gave me an opportunity to look into and research certain things in my major such as the format in which professional genres are assembled in my major. I can definitely see myself using multiple genres for the future and I will definitely be using this type of format if I have to present something. As I stated before this project was a blast for me and I learned a whole lot about a topic that is very relevant to my life. All in all I would say that fact alone makes this project a success.
